RADIAL AND AXIAL PLAY Bearings are assembled with a slight amount of looseness between the balls and the raceways. This allows the bearing to rotate smoothly but also affects the performance of the bearing in a given application. This looseness can be split into two components - radial and axial play. RADIAL PLAY is the maximum displacement that one bearing ring can be displaced relative to the other ring in a direction perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the bearing. AXIAL PLAY, or end play, is the maximum relative displacement of the bearing rings, in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation. Radial and axial play are interdependent and are determined during the manufacture of the bearing. Typically, radial play is a purchasing specification. Needle roller bearings Needle roller bearings are roller bearings with cylindrical rollers that are small in diameter.
In spite of their low cross section, needle roller bearings have a high load carrying capacity and are therefore extremely suitable for bearing arrangements where radial space is limited. Rotary table bearings Axial/radial bearings are ready-to-fit high precision bearings for high precision applications with combined loads. They can support radial loads and axial loads from both sides as well as tilting moments and are particularly suitable for bearing arrangements with high requirements for running accuracy, for example in rotary tables, face plates, milling heads and reversible clamps. Due to the fixing holes in the bearing rings, the units are very easy to fit. The bearings are radially and axially preloaded after fitting. Thrust Roller Bearing A Thrust Roller Bearing is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other bearings they permit rotation between parts, but Thrust Roller Bearings are designed to support a predominately axial load. Thrust bearings come in several varieties like Thrust ball bearings, Cylindrical thrust roller bearings, Tapered roller thrust bearings, Spherical roller thrust bearings, Fluid bearings and Magnetic bearings. Thrust Roller Bearing are commonly used in automotive, marine, and aerospace applications. They are also used in the main and tail rotor blade grips of RC (radio controlled) helicopters. One specific thrust bearing in an automobile is the clutch "throw out" bearing, sometimes called the clutch release bearing.
